NAHUM 1:1-15
Brothers and sisters in Christ, Jonah preached in 862 BC in Nineveh, and the city
was converted and for more than 100 years was the most religious and God-
fearing city in Asia. However, after about two generations of following God they
returned to their former practices of brutality and fierceness in war and
conquered much of the known world at the time. They turned away from God
and became a place of unparalleled wickedness and lowest morality. Nahum
preached the destruction 100 years before Nineveh was destroyed by the
Babylonians so completely that it remained hidden for 2,500 years.
Children of the Most High, God is calling on all Christians today to change for
good. The prophet Nahum, delivers a sober message of judgment to Nineveh, but
in the middle of his harsh prophecy he offers hope. Nahum 1 vs 7: “The Lord is
good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him.” God
knows us and wants to protect us. Some of us believers as well as non-believers
doubt He will judge us, sometimes citing His slowness in coming and His love for
His creatures. We must know however that He is a jealous God and will not acquit
the wicked.
Beloved, God promised us a place in His kingdom if we love Him and keep His
commandments. We must repent of our ways and return to God. God is always
ready to forgive, but He has obligation as part of His character to uphold justice.
Judgement will come in His timing for He cannot be the good God and be
otherwise. As Jesus wept over Jerusalem (Luke 19: 41 – 44), we should for our
nation. We should have a sense of urgency towards those who don’t know the
Lord. We need to offer prayer for our nation, care about those who need the Lord
and share the testimony of what God had done for us.The Lord is a refuge in
times of trouble and cares for those who trust in Him, but with an overwhelming
flood He made an end of Nineveh.
We are pressed all around by circumstances and individuals that want us to compromise our
faith for worldly gain. God is withus in whatever the unpleasant situation we might be in
and when we place our trust in Christ, God in His grace gives us what we don’t deserve—eternal life.
He went to the cross and die for you and me to crush the power of sin and break its
yoke from our neck. God will destroy all who reject His sovereign rule and plot
against Him. By rejecting Christ, people are turning their backs on eternal
life—they will receive what they deserve–justice.
PRAYER POINT: Father, please convict me of even the smallest sins, and help me
turn toward you in joyful obedience.
