EXODUS 3:13-15
Beloved, God appeared to Moses while tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law at Mount Horeb and gave him what became a big assignment “sending him to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt”. He requested that God should tell him more about Himself. Who is God? What is His name? The question and answer discussions are tabulated in Exodus 3:13-15.
13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?”
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.”
God asked Moses to be the deliverer for His people, but Moses couldn’t understand how God could use him saying that he wasn’t all that great of a speaker. But God said, “Moses, I AM that I AM”. I will be everything you need to do what I have asked you to do. I will be the One who protects you from Pharaoh, who convinces the people that you are the chosen one and the One whose power frees the Israelite nation.
Brethren, by saying, “I am who I am”, God is presenting Himself as the self-existent and independent God of the universe. I am, a name describing his eternal power and unchangeable character. In a world where values, morals and laws change constantly, we can find stability and security in our unchanging God. The God who appeared to Moses is the same God who can live in us today. Hebrews 13:8 says “God is the same, yesterday, today and forever”. When God says “I AM,” it means “I will be everything you need.”.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, Moses obeyed and allowed the statement to be proved true that says, “When you have nothing left but God, then you become aware that God is enough.” He became aware of the sufficiency of God. His efficiency without God’s sufficiency is a deficiency. Whatever be your need this year, the Great I AM wants you to know that He can meet your every need. He is Jehovah Rapha, the Lord who heals – for those who are sick. Jehovah Jireh, the Lord who provides for those in need, Jehovah Nissi, – the Lord is my banner for those who fight battles. To the one who is facing financial difficulties, He says, “I AM the Great Provider.”, to the one with medical needs He says, “I AM the Great Physician.”. to the one who needs encouragement He is the Comforter and to the one who needs strength He is the Almighty. He can meet every need we have and we can depend completely upon Him to supply our every necessity. Paul writes in Phil. 4:19, My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
There are many wonderful names for God, but the one that covers them all is I AM. That name lets us know that He exists, He never changes, and that He will be all that we need. He is the Great I AM.
Beloved children of the Most High God, knowing the names of God should help our prayer life, make us more secure and panic less during trials of life, help to reflect our intimacy with Him and understanding His names should help us worship Him better.
PRAYER POINT: Our Father in Heaven, please make Yourself known in our church, our families, and our land, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
