EXODUS 2: 1-10
Jochebed was a godly mother who by faith let God in the life of her son, Moses. Pharaoh had decreed that all male Hebrew children born would be drowned in the river Nile, because he feared that they might become too powerful. Jochebed knew that by the decree King Pharaoh had made her baby’s life would be forfeited if she didn’t do something to save him. She likewise knew that her own life was on the line if she disobeyed. So Jochebed, fearing God more than man, made a decision that, though it put her in great jeopardy, proved to be the decision that saved a nation. When Moses was born, Jochebed therefore hid him for three months until she could not hide him any longer. She then placed him in an ark and concealed the ark in the bushes by the riverbank, where the baby was discovered and adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter, and raised as an Egyptian. In seeking to preserve Moses’ life, she saved the life of Israel’s future law-giver and the leader of the Exodus. Moses became one of the greatest national leaders and legislators the world has ever known and by divine inspiration, wrote the first five books of the Bible.
Mothers and grandmothers, nothing will have a more profound and lasting influence in the lives of your children than having good, godly examples in your homes. A godly mother prays for and with her children (James 5:16), sets an example by the life she leads (2 Timothy 1:5), has a compassionate heart (Psalm 103:13), studies God’s Word
and teaches it to her children (Deuteronomy11:19) and stands firm in her faith.(Philippians 1:27) It was Jochebed’s love, faith and courage that saved her child from a cruel death and preserved him to bless the world.
